Stars from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are among the 10 most expensive summer signings made by Premier League clubs in 2023.
As usual, Premier League clubs dominated the most expensive transfers made in the summer of 2023 and we’ve taken a closer look at the 10 most expensive deals from the summer.
Using figures from Transfermarkt, we’ve gathered the 10 most expensive Premier League transfers from this summer and have assessed how they have been doing at their new clubs so far.
10. Matheus Nunes
Spare a thought for Kalvin Phillips. As Pep Guardiola clearly doesn’t trust the former Leeds United man, he decided to go out in the summer and purchase another holding midfielder to cover the position.
The Premier League champions splashed around £54millon on the Wolves midfielder who has had a steady impact in his new surroundings so far. We’ll no doubt get to see more of the 25-year-old throughout the year, but the early signs have been fairly promising.
9. Romeo Lavia
The transfer saga surrounding Lavia dragged on throughout most of the summer until Chelsea eventually struck a deal with Southampton and took the teenager from under Liverpool’s nose.
Chelsea paid just over £54million for his services and we are still waiting to see him in action for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Lavia has been nursing an ankle injury which could keep him sidelined until late November.
8. Sandro Tonali
The Italian midfielder made an instant impact at St. James’ Park with a goal on his debut against Aston Villa. Tonali has enjoyed a steady start to life in the Premier League following his £55million move, although he could face a prolonged spell on the sidelines.
Newcastle recently released a club statement confirming that the 23-year-old is being investigated by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation concerning alleged illegal betting activity. If found guilty, Tonali could face a lengthy ban.
7. Mason Mount
There’s no denying that Mount had a difficult final season with Chelsea and despite Man Utd’s struggles so far, Mount has been a solid performer in Erik ten Hag’s side this season.
The 24-year-old has had a short spell on the sidelines but has generally been a solid performer when called upon. The expectations are always going to be high when making a £56million move, but Mount has showcased in flashes what he is capable of.
6. Dominik Szoboszlai
The Hungarian midfielder already looks like a great addition to Jurgen Klopp’s side. Following his £61million move from RB Leipzig, Liverpool fans have already taken to the 22-year-old.
Szoboszlai has produced 40 shot-creating actions in the Premier League so far which has only been bettered by Bruno Fernandes and James Maddison this season.

5. Kai Havertz
Mikel Arteta seems confident the former Chelsea man will come good at Arsenal and he has shown a few glimpses of quality in north London to be fair. Plenty of pundits raised their eyebrows at the £65million move, but Arteta seems pleased with him so far.
“There are so many parts to his game that he is doing exceptionally well and we know he has to keep improving,” Arteta told reporters. “As with any player, give him support, you see a player that does what he does every single day and applies himself. If they don’t perform, it’s up to us.”
The jury is still out on this signing given the money that Arsenal paid, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Havertz pop up with a big moment or two throughout the campaign for Arsenal.
4. Rasmus Hojlund
He’s yet to hit the back of the net in the Premier League, but United fans have already seen what Hojlund is capable of after a few eye-catching performances in the Champions League.
Erik ten Hag has placed his trust in the young forward following his £65million move from Atalanta this summer which could rise to over £70million with add-ons. The early signs are very promising and former United forward Andy Cole has high hopes for the youngster.
“I think we’re all hoping that he can become a superstar,” Cole told Betfred. “I think he’s adjusting really well and the only thing that he’s missing so far is his first Premier League goal. He’s a young man that’s fearless, which is something he should be at his age, energetic and physical.”
3. Josko Gvardiol
Following his £78million move to Man City, Gvardiol became the second-most expensive defender in football history, only trailing Harry Maguire who cost a whopping £80million back in 2019.
The 21-year-old has often played on the left-hand side of Man City’s defence in a left-back/centre-half hybrid role. For the most part, Gvardiol has looked the business and he’ll no doubt go on to have a long and successful career in the Premier League.
2. Declan Rice
The 24-year-old was highly sought after this summer and for good reason. Rice had proven himself to be a top performer at West Ham and England and he’s only added to his game since joining the Gunners in the summer.
Arteta splashed a club-record fee of £100million on the midfielder, plus an additional £5million in add-ons. Despite the hefty price tag, Rice has delivered the goods in north London so far. He’s effortlessly slotted into Arsenal’s midfield trio and has already garnered plenty of praise for his impact so far.

1. Moises Caicedo
Chelsea weren’t messing around this summer as they splashed over £400millon on incoming players, with their most expensive addition being Caicedo. The Brighton midfielder cost a whopping £100million, plus an additional £13million which could follow in add-ons.
Caicedo was highly sought after after an eye-catching season with Brighton and the move to Chelsea did make sense given they had just lost the likes of Mount, N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic.
Despite a fairly wobbly start to life at Stamford Bridge, Caicedo has grown into the season and seems to be getting better with every performance. It’s still early days, but there have been plenty of promising signs from the 21-year-old.
