Chelsea’s 10 most expensive sales – & how they fared after leaving

Chelsea have spent heavier than almost everybody else during the 21st century, as the west Londoners have won every single trophy on offer.

But there have been a few occasions in the Premier League era where Chelsea have agreed to sell a player in a big-money deal.

We’ve looked at Chelsea’s 10 most expensive outgoings according to Transfermarkt to see how they fared after leaving Stamford Bridge.

10. Alvaro Morata

The Spanish forward only spent a couple of years at Stamford Bridge as he generally struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League. Morata started out at Atletico Madrid as a youngster and he rejoined the Spanish club in 2019.

Since leaving Chelsea, Mortata has spent his days bouncing between Juventus and Madrid and he’s scored a total of 65 goals. He’s now back in La Liga and is Atletico Madrid’s top scorer this season.

9. Thibaut Courtois

There can be no doubt that Courtois’ switch to Real Madrid in 2018 has been a hit. The Belgian goalkeeper has won seven trophies already with the Spanish giants and there’s probably still more to come.

8. Romelu Lukaku

Following a successful loan spell, Lukaku joined Everton in 2014 for £31million and he enjoyed several successful seasons with the Toffees. After stints with Manchester United and Inter Milan, he rejoined Chelsea in 2021, but the less said about that the better.

The Belgian forward is now back with Inter on loan, but he’s not quite been able to rekindle his goalscoring touch. With just three league goals to show for this season so far, it’s not been the best of years for Lukaku.

7. Tammy Abraham

Abraham has been enjoying life in Italy since his switch in 2021. Jose Mourinho has got the best out of the English forward at Roma and he’s formed a fine partnership with Paulo Dybala this season.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move back to Stamford Bridge and as Chelsea hold a buy-back clause in Abraham’s contract, the ball is in their court.

6. Nemanja Matic

At his peak, Matic was one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League. Mourinho brought him to Old Trafford for around £40million and he’s since relinked up with the midfielder at Roma.

5. Juan Mata

The Spanish playmaker departed Chelsea in January 2014 for a fee of around £40million. Mata was a popular figure at Old Trafford as he went on to make 285 appearances for the Red Devils.

The 34-year-old left the Premier League last year and is now playing for Galatasaray. He’s still got the magic in his boots.

4. David Luiz

The Brazilian defender racked up 248 appearances for Chelsea across his two spells with the club. They decided to cash in on him for around £44million in 2014 as PSG swooped in for him.

He would later rejoin Chelsea and help them to the Premier League title in 2016-17. After then spending a couple of frantic years with Arsenal, Luiz is now back in his native country playing for Flamengo.

3. Oscar

Oscar’s move to China in 2017 raised plenty of eyebrows and he still plays for Shanghai Port today. Chelsea received around £53million for the Brazilian midfielder who became one of the highest-paid players in the world after making the move.

2. Diego Costa

The Spanish forward will always be a popular player at Stamford Bridge after his goals guided Chelsea to two Premier League titles. He then rejoined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2017 for a fee of around £53million.

After a short stint in Brazil, Costa is now back in the Premier League playing for Wolves. The 34-year-old is yet to find the back of the net for his new club and he is currently nursing a knee injury.

1. Eden Hazard

We still can’t believe how badly this signing has turned out. Hazard was one of the finest players the Premier League has seen, but since his £101million move to Real Madrid, he’s not been the same player.
