Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville on punditry duty for Sky during Wolves v Cardiff, 30 November 2018, Cardiff City Stadium

Watch: Neville & Carra brilliantly dissect the PL’s ownership debate

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville were typically articulate and absorbing as they discussed the wider issues surrounding the ownership of various Premier League football clubs – particularly Chelsea and Newcastle United.

The sanctions imposed on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich by the UK government has sparked a renewed debate behind the ethical implications of the Russian oligarch’s ownership of Chelsea – which has led to some awkward and difficult questions being asked of Blues boss Thomas Tuchel.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has also faced some uncomfortable questions regarding their Saudi-backed owners.

Saudi Arabia was reported to have executed 81 men over the weekend, but Howe refused to be drawn into wider geopolitical and ethical arguments, instead insisting that he’ll only answer questions on football matters.

As ever, Sky Sports’ brilliant flagship analysis programme Monday Night Football didn’t skirt the issue, with former Premier League defenders Neville and Carragher giving their thoughts on the latest developments – and what the sanctioning faced by Abramovich could mean for the future of football club ownership.

“The Premier League don’t know what to do on this subject, I don’t think it’s going to be accepted anymore,” stated Neville.
