Inter, Liverpool & Arsenal are among European football’s top-scoring sides in 2023-24

Plenty of the usual suspects make their way into the top 10 highest scorers in 2023-24, but there is also room for some surprise inclusions on the list.

We’re midway through the campaign and many of the usual suspects feature towards the top end of the goalscoring charts, although there are some surprise packages in place of high-profile absentees like Real Madrid and Manchester United.

We’ve taken a closer look at these sides and have ranked the 10 highest-scoring teams in Europe’s top five leagues in 2023-24.

10. PSG – 54 goals

Those who watched Luis Enrique set PSG up with a wildly attacking 4-2-4 formation away to Newcastle earlier in the season in the Champions League will not be surprised to see they’re Ligue 1’s top scorers by a street.

Lionel Messi and Neymar have departed and been replaced by Randal Kolo Muani, Goncalo Ramos and Ousmane Dembele. It’s taken some time for their new-look attack to start clicking, but Mbappe is prolific as ever in his new centre-forward role (21 Ligue 1 goals this season) and he looks set to wave goodbye to his hometown club on a high.

=8. Aston Villa – 56 goals

Unai Emery’s Villa look a safe bet to qualify for the Champions League, and they’re well worth their place in the Premier League’s top four.

And in Ollie Watkins (14 goals, 10 assists) leading the line, they boast one of Europe’s very most dangerous forwards right now.

=8. Barcelona – 56 goals

It’s been an underwhelming title defence for Barcelona, who are currently eight points behind Real Madrid, but for all the talk of crisis they’ve only lost three outings all season, are averaging over two goals a game and aren’t far off their points-per-game average from last term.

Just goes to show a dysfunctional Barca are still a pretty good side in the grand scheme of things.

7. Girona – 57 goals

We’re approaching the business end of the La Liga season and Girona, remarkably, sit second in the table, just six points behind league Real Madrid.

The Catalan minnows are enjoying a ridiculously good season, having only lost three matches all season. Spanish football’s top-scoring side have looked so complete that some in the media have asked whether they might be capable of doing a Leicester.

It looks increasingly unlikely they’ll catch Los Blancos, but nevertheless Girona are a wonderfully watchable team. Appointment viewing.

=5. Manchester City – 59 goals

It will come as no surprise that Man City have been one of the most prolific sides in Europe this year once again. Pep Guardiola’s side scored 94 league goals last season and it wouldn’t be a shock if they beat that tally this year.

Both Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne are back fit and firing and all signs point to City gearing up for one of those title-defining, outrageously relentless winning runs.

=5. Bayer Leverkusen – 59 goals

Xabi Alonso has done a terrific job since taking charge at Bayer Leverkusen. He joined the club in October last year when they were sat in the relegation zone and then guided them to an unbelievable 6th placed finish.

The German outfit have gone to the next level this season and smashed Bayern Munich in their last outing. They remain unbeaten across all competitions and have built up a healthy lead at the top of the Bundesliga.

It’s no wonder Liverpool are sounding out Alonso as Jurgen Klopp’s potential successor.

4. Arsenal – 62 goals

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners spent the early months of 2023-24 looking ineffective compared to last season’s free-wheeling attackers.

But they’ve picked up considerably since returning from their winter break, registering a 100% Premier League win record in 2024, scoring 27 goals in their last six games.

=1. Bayern Munich – 63 goals

It’s not taken long for Harry Kane to have an impact at his new club.

The England captain is the front-runner for the European Golden Shoe, and has already scored more goals than any Bundesliga player managed in the entirety of last season.

But there are goals throughout this Bayern team, with the likes of Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman and Jamal Musiala chipping in with a healthy number.

Sixty-three goals is a terrifyingly strong return from just 23 games played. It’s ridiculous that they’re eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen.

=1. Liverpool – 63 goals

Last term was the worst full season of Jurgen Klopp’s reign at Anfield but they’ve come roaring back in 2023-24. They sit top of the Premier League table, having suffered just two defeats, have already won the Carabao Cup and remain in the FA Cup and Europa League.

Questions remain over Klopp’s best line-up, particularly in attack, but you can file that as a nice problem to have. Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo have notched a combined 40 goals and 25 assists this season. Klopp is blessed with options.

=1. Inter Milan – 63 goals

The Nerazzurri currently top Serie A and they also lead the way for the most goals scored in the Italian top flight – having scored 22(!) more goals than distant title chasers Juventus.

In fact, Inter are the joint top scorers across Europe’s major leagues and have also conceded the fewest – 12. By any measure they surely have to be considered among the top contenders for this season’s Champions League.

In the absence of Romelu Lukaku and Edin Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez has stepped up to the plate as Inter’s main man and has scored 22 goals so far. Only Kane has scored more.
